It is very, very sad, but this is the reality for many of the homeless especially since The Columbus house has changed the way they admit people to referral only. The fact that many of these people you find at the bus stops basically living there are drunks that spend their days panhandling and nights drinking. I hate to sound so callous about it, but I know alot of the homeless people here in New Haven due to my career and this is the reality.
Careways is for women with children and Lifehaven is a program for people struggling with mental health issues. You can no longer just walk into Columbus House and get a place to sleep. It is being done now by a referral system. The options are vvery, very slim now and it will get worse as the weather continues to get worse.
That is great information Josh, but have you considered that these people have no money to go to any of these places. Even the shelter in Milford.. It is for mainly women and women with children. Their male space is very small and limited. Something HAS to be done here in New Haven such as going back to the way Columbus House used to be run.
Josh, how is some homeless guy on a bench in New Haven, suppose to get to Danbury? Additionally, what would you suggest to him if there is no room at the in when he arrives in a town that is unfamiliar to him? I guess as long as you're not inconvenienced by the sight of him it doesn't matter.
Have you ever stayed in an inner city homeless shelter Josh? Hit your knees right now kid, and pray you never have to. [removed].
BillyR, So I'm the bad guy for trying to get someone to pick him up get him in a shelter and hot meal and stop him from freezing to death? You are an idiot. What do you think see click fix is for?
Josh has always been spoiled he doesn't know the struggle. Thats why it bothers him to see a homeless man sleeping on the bench in the middle of the night when buses aren't running
Most non-profit agencies or programs with case managers have access to these referrals. They have to filled out and sent to the Columbus House for approval. Prior to this new system, anyone could go to Columbus House shelter and get in line for a place to sleep until the morning. Now they want you to sign a promise to accept case management and agree to participate in services. HOwever, it is a process and does not get anyone of the street immediately.
Yes it is sad , unfortunate. It appears to be daytime , the person dozing off in the picture might just wake up and tell you that he's waiting for a bus , of course he'll be asking for a dollar etc..
This is a gentleman who is part of the prison or a program pipeline, he just has a few stops on the way..
Many homeless are not from New Haven , but the surrounding communities , many have already stayed at those Bridgeport Shelters, many return there after a few months . Many do receive treatment and help here.
Many are from the poorer reaches of society , have been blocked out of the process , happens all over, even worse with these trying times of helpless, hopeless, homeless
Busses run as late as 1am downtown New Haven and this isnt supposed to be a debate or a forum for belittling the next person. There could be numerous reasons why this person is asleep in the bus shelter... Homeless, drunk, psychiatric medications are a combination of all three. The issue here is where can these people that seriously need a place to sleep find one?
I appreciate the "acknowledgment", it would be nice if NHPD would also post what they propose to do about it. Meetings with the Town Green folks, City social and human support services and the area's alderman could be productive. This problem isonly going to get worse over the winter, and it is both a humanitarian and police issue.
Still open, eh ??
Almost 10 months old and they're still sleeping where homeless people tend to sleep.
The NHPD chooses to leave them alone and let them sleep.
It's actually a decent policy when you think about the poor panhandling homeless.
Guess posting it here is useless.

I don't understand what is expected to be done with these homeless people. Maybe if the City of New Haven tightened up the shelters that are even still open, more people would utilize them. But to go to a shelter where there is drug use, violence and bullying taking place as well as unsanitary conditions, they may as well stay in the bus shelters where at least they don't have to walk a couple miles to get to it.
