Idling trucks reported last night at 8:30 continued for at least 90mins, and were succeeded by others.
The vibrations and noise make you feel as if you're inside an engine.
is there anyone who can help? (Khách)
Last night around 10PM there was a WaWa truck outside the WaWa store with the truck idling for a full hour!
This morning 6AM there was another truck idling for at least 40 minutes.
If anyone is serious about patrolling this situation they should be at 518 south 2nd street Philadelphia most nights 9PM-11PM and also early morning.

Hello!
I am sorry to hear that this situation has not improved. I have a few questions that may help us address this issue.
1. Does this Wawa have a "No idling" sign posted outside?
2. Who has been contacted regarding this issue? Wawa headquarters? Police? Air Management Services?
We are working on alerting all the stakeholders to this issue. Thank you for your patience!
Sincerely,
Kate Zaidan

5:30-6am Friday 21 May 2010. McLane delivery truck #24096 idling loudly for close to half an hour.
As for who has been contacted, we used to call the local manager (not Wawa HQ) with complaints, but the effects were temporary. It has been mentioned to police on patrol, who did not seem concerned.

Not really fixed yet! :( (Khách)
A No Idling sign has been posted outside the Wawa (Thank You!). But idling has not stopped altogether. 10pm-1am and 5-7am are the most disruptive times, but it does still happen, especially at night. For some reason, McLane drivers seem more reluctant than others to shut off their motors.
Our previous dealings were with the manager of the Wawa, not with Wawa headquarters. Idling behavior would cease temporarily, then resume as before. It has been mentioned to police on patrol, but this had no noticeable effect. Please stay after Wawa and others to put an end to this air and noise pollution. Many thanks!

I'm glad to hear a sign was posted. We have alerted Air Management Services, as well as the police and the PPA. Clean Air Council will go ahead and send a letter to Wawa corporate letting them know. I didn't have luck finding a contact at McLane. Are there ever phone numbers on the trucks or anything?
We will keep on this!

After a brief period of improvement, drivers have lapsed into leaving motors idling for 30+ mins during deliveries.
McLane trucks seem never to shut off motors. There must be an appropriate contact number buried somewhere in their website:
http://www.mclaneco.com/wps/portal
Note the Green Advantage portion of their website, where it reads 'McLane is... a dedicated environmental partner, committed to living, working and investing to improve the communities we serve. Through our Green Advantage Initiative, we have made significant improvements in the way we work that will not only reduce our environmental impact, but also make McLane a better and more efficient company.'

If a bus, large commercial truck or construction equipment is observed to be running its engine while stationary, please contact the Air Management Services Unit at 215-685-7580.
All other vehicles, (cars, pickup trucks, vans, motorcycles, etc.), please report it to the Police Department at 911. Thank you. (mb)
McLane truck returns to idle! (Khách)
Last night a McLane delivery truck was Idling directly outside the WaWa for 30 minutes. A call was made to the manager who said "That is a McLane truck" which I interpreted to mean he has no control over that company. He told me "The truck is leaving in five minutes." I pointed out to him that there is a "No Idling" sign posted outside his store. But he did not seem concerned.
Philly 311, please help us neighborhood folks who yearn for cleaner air - or at least air without excess truck exhaust. Thank you.

Last night (Sunday 13 June) at midnight a McLane truck was idling here for close to 45mins. Since I'd called the Wawa manager about a McLane truck just two nights before, I decided to try 911.
The officer with whom I spoke made me repeat every detail of my complaint, then said he would 'send someone right over to check it out'. The truck continued idling for another 20mins before leaving, which suggests that the cop assigned to investigate never came, or decided this was a non-issue, or had a friendly chat with the driver and effectively did nothing.

I have been following this issue also! The Mc Lane truck seems to be the biggest repeat offender. Most often around 10:30 PM.
The Penske truck driver did turn off his engine after the WaWa manager was called.
Please do not close this ticket until the pollution from the delivery trucks is really resolved. The No idling sign was great, now we need people with authority to enforce it.

Though many companies (Jack & Jill, et al) have started shutting off motors during deliveries, MCLANE drivers persistently leave truck engines running. They make deliveries between 10:30 and midnight several times each week.

McLane truck returns to idle! (Khách)

2:00am Mon 28 Jun 2010: McLane driver left engine running for over an hour, as usual. These trucks routinely disregard NO IDLING sign and its threat of fines posted directly above Wawa entrance on 2nd St between South & Lombard.
Police called via 911 have not helped, despite the fact that there are often plenty of police near 2nd & South.
Fumes, noise and vibrations are all disruptive violations and should be addressed by responsible agencies. Please help!
PS Thanks to my neighbor for confirming that McLane drivers are consistently non-compliant.

Dear McLane Driver,
Thank you very much for your response. I think everyone should appreciate your work -- I certainly do. I mean no disrespect by asking how it is that such a large, powerful truck has a refrigeration unit so inefficient that it produces so much noise and vibration. Companies that deliver *only* frozen goods -- Jack & Jill Ice Cream, for example -- have trucks that are completely silent during delivery. Is this a diesel issue?
Respectfully,
Early Riser
McLane Driver (Khách)
Early Riser,
Jack & Jill has smaller trucks and its only 1 compartment and 1 temperature. McLane has 3 zones and all 3 has a different temperature. 1 is the freezer, 2 is supplies and bananas, 3 is all cooler products. Our trucks use a larger refer unit then some of the other delivery guys and McLane does use some of the most state of the art equipment and only use the refer units for a certain amount of hours before they are replaced by new units. That is a part of the contract they have with Thermal King which is the manufacturer of those units.
We hold a drivers meeting every month and we are kept up to date with all info and most dealings going on throughout the company and we are aware of the ongoing issue of the noise etc and we do take many measures not to disturb the neighbors but we do have large equipment to get the job done efficient. All those who are effected by this issue I do apologize on behalf of the company and we do our best at getting in and out of the stores. Thanks for understanding...

Thanks for responding and taking notice of the issues the community is having. We can appreciate that the refers must be running in order to keep the food cold. There may be other solutions to not disrupting the community during your delivery, and if you would like to explore them Clean Air Council would be happy to set up a meeting between all parties.
Thanks for your help!

I have lived at Abbotts Square Condominium for five years. i can attest that during the day and well into the night, 10:00 p.m. 11:00 p.m. and even later - 4:00 a.m. I have heard delivery trucks pull up and idle for as long as 20 minutes before the sound is reduced. Rarely have these trucks turn off their refers.
The noise can be very loud as the night gets later. All units which face second street hear this noise on a daily basis. In the summer, it is really noisy if you want to open your windows or doors.
There must be some process whereby drivers can turn off while unloading. Otherwise, I suggest that they unload on south street and use the back entrance hallway to unload food and supplies to WaWa.
