There is an entire group of homeless living out of their cars on 17th from Treat to Potrero, littering, urinating and more on the street. They park their car for days - with no effort by DPT to move them for street cleaning etc.
Hey, at least they aren't sitting and lying on the sidewalk, am I right? Next you should petition for a law that says you can't sit or lie in am automobile.
Yes, campgrounds that are conveniently located close to public services, and possible jobs or sources of income. MCA, I hope you never become homeless enough to live in your car because you would be at the mercy of people like yourself.
We'd like to outreach to these folks. It would be helpful if the reporter can give an idea of what kind of vehicles the people are living in, eg, color, make, possibly license plates as well as an idea of how many folks there are and when they are most likely to be found.
you are a supervisor of the homeless outreach program and have no clue about 17th st. homeless people. what the puck are you doing Mr supervisor what a pricking joke
We are a citywide outreach team and provide outreach, engagement and stabilization services for approximatly 14 hours per day, beginning in Golden Gate park at 4:30 in the morning.
Information from people such as yourself that pinpoints the locations, needs, and identifies homeless people who need our services is incredibly important. We will (and have in the past) outreached in this area; people living in vehicles are especially hard to connect with. Our resources are limited; we can outreach to an area several times, but if the folks are not there at that time, we don't have success and it is a poor use of our time. It is helpful to know how many people are at a given location so we can identify, going in the resources we will need.
I am sorry that you are so angry that you need to express that anger in your post and direct it at me; please be advised that my team and I have been working very hard to address neighborhood problems such as yours, especially in the recent cold weather. Please feel free to contact me in whatever manner suits you.

We checked the area from 16th and Bryant to potrero, from 17th and Folsom to Potrero plus adjoining side streets. We found one vehicle that appeared to be occupied, but nobody was in it at that time. We found numerous RV's, mostly down around the ASPCA building towards Potrero, but typically those folks don't need or accept services--they are vehicularly housed and not homeless.
Any additional guidance about what the vehicles location, make, model, and timing would be helpful to locate people who may need services.
Jason sorry for being so upset, But this has been happening on 17th for over 25yrs this is one of the few places left they could park and feel somewhat safe at night. Next stop would be to sleep on the doorsteps of these new lofts. It is a hard population to work with but if you could just help one it would make a difference .....GOOD LUCK.... larry
There is no doubt that the vehicularly housed are some of the most difficult folks to outreach and engage with out there. They usually don't want to trade their selfsufficient RV's and sometimes cars for a @#$%-in-the-sink unit in the tenderloin. But we do outreach to these folks, we do engage with them and sometimes they come in and work with us. We will continue to do that--I've driven 17th street several times since the first post and ID'd a couple of non-moving vehicles plus quite a few RV's in the area.
If there is someone you specifically think we should outreach too, someone you may have talked to, let me know with a description of them and/or their vehicle.

California Constitution states all citizens have the right to acquire, possess and protect their property. Also states that we have the right to pursue and obtain safety, happiness & privacy. Been living on wheels since 1993, raised 5 children, including two Marines. On Jan 4th of 2011, my older Tioga RV suffered a transmission failure – in addition from the trauma of having to come up with hundreds of dollars on a fixed income, we were forced to endure angry police visits engaging in a “sweep” of the area; it was so bad it was reported in the local newspaper. No, not as the disgraceful behavior it is, but rather, that the “residents” had had enough. Well, so have I. I love my lifestyle. See my civil rights writing @ http://freethegypsy.ramonamayon.com

This is an ongoing issue. For example, over the course of the past year the same RV has been parked at the corner of 17th and Treat which is so full of what looks like garbage that you conveniently can't even see into the vehicle. I've observed various RVs/busses parked on the street for weeks at a time with no enforcement of the law prohibiting sleeping in a vehicle on the street.
A similar problem was recently solved on Division Street between Bryant and 15th Street by simply prohibiting overnight parking.
To the people complaining that us residents are heartless elitists, I applaud your initiative. You more than welcome to come tow these vehicles and place them outside your homes.

There are another group that live in decrepit motor homes around the Evan's campus City College. Tragically there is no human and ethical solution.
I suggest a dynamic change of present reality dichotomy that involves a sort of "cannibalism."
Who's with me on this one?
Oh, just me.
Well enjoy living the present system we all work collectively to create and can't fathom living with out. I think it still sucks anyhow.

What a joke. You people are complaining about homeless. I heard the city budget for homeless is something like 40,000 per homeless a year.
Where do you expect them to go?
Homelessness is a problem that stems from society, not a personal one.
You mission locals don't have a clue
