Only the left lane goes straight through Orange Street; the right lane is marked as turn-only onto Orange. This is not efficient. The right lane should be both a turning lane and straight-lane travel. You may have to mark the pavement crossing Orange Street so that traffic stays in its lane, but you will prevent a long line of cars forming on Grove if you permit both lanes of travel to go straight. Grove St between Orange and Whtiney/Church is still a two-lane road, so there doesn't seem to be a good reason to limit the number of lanes that can drive straight.

As you drive west on Trumbull Street, 2 traffic signals at (1) Trumbull and Whitney and (2) Trumbull at Temple, are not well synchronized. The light at Trumbull and Temple, including left turn signal to turn south onto Temple, turns green immediately after the light at Trumbull and Whitney turns red. There is little space between the lights; only about 3-4 cars fit. As a consequence, only about three cars can take advantage of the left signal and green light on any cycle. Therefore, the line of traffic going westbound on Trumbull takes a very long time to advance. You may have to adjust the walk signal at Whtiney and Trumbull, but definitely the lights should be adjusted so that they are green at the same time, and the entire lane of traffic built up on Trumbull before Whtiney can take advantage of the green light at Temple.
The backup on Trumbull has a ripple effect: it is common for drivers exiting from the highway to "block the box" at Trumbull and Orange, especially in the morning, so that southbound Orange Street traffic is blocked.

Confusing lane shift Arkiverad625 State St New Haven, CT 06511 - DowntownCrossing the Grove/Olive St. intersection southbound on State St. is hazardous in the far right lane.
There are three lanes at the intersection on the north side, but only two lanes and a parking lane on the south side of the intersection. The left lane on the north side is a left-turn only. The other two lanes should proceed straight through the intersection, but drivers in the middle lane routinely cross into the right lane as they cross the intersection. This is because the left turn lane is aligned with the far-left lane that proceeds straight on the other side of the intersection. Drivers in the right lane who proceed straight are forced into cars that are parallel-parked on the right shoulder. Thus, only the middle lane effectively goes straight.
The middle lane and right lane must be more clearly marked. Arrows on the pavement should indicate that the middle lane jogs left to stay straight, and the right lane is available to turn right or jog left to go straight. Signs attached to the traffic light crossbeam could also help. But something must be done!
Three times I have nearly been hit by drivers in the middle lane as I attempted to drive straight from the right lane.
