The loud pipes they use are really a safety device. The noise makes it easier for cars to realize that motorcycles are there. - and no, I don't own a motorcycle.
Safety device...whatever...they do it because they think it sounds cool. They don't need to be that ridiculously loud. I can tolerate it during the day but we have the same loud bikes driving down our street at two and three in the morning. Just plain rude.
They are mufflered. They are mufflered like that so you know they are there. It's not to "sound cool" it's to prevent knuckleheads from crashing into them. Secondly, reving engines sometimes is to keep them from stalling..
I think it's funny when people say that loud pipes save lives, but then they don't even wear a helmet, which actually does save lives.
Bikes come with mufflers, but many people swap out the muffler with a straight pipe to try to be cool. Also, if you have to rev your engine to keep your bike from stalling, then something is obviously wrong and needs to be fixed.

It will be a problem again as soon as the weather breaks. How is it that Mentor has a sound ordinance and does not enforce it? I'm sure if I disconnected the header mufflers on my high performance car engine and drove around Mentor I would get ticketed. Some of the bikes that blast past my house and around Mentor run straight pipes and they make sure the whole neighborhood can hear them even at 2:00 in the morning when they leave the 306 Lounge.
The "loud pipes saves lives" statement isn't an argument, it's a stupid bumper sticker. Guys who's mother didn't love them and are looking for attention have bikes like that. Problem is, if you start writing citations for them all, you'll have to write up a dozen city cops, so you know it's not going to happen. But if you're a punk kid with a loud radio, you better believe you're getting pulled over.
My car has a muffler problem...It`s loud,......so I redesignated my vehicle as a motorcyle,so ,now I don`t have to get my muffler fixed ,and I can "ride" without a seatbelt.
I would like to make a comment about loud motorcycles please. Some motorcycles are so loud I can hear them two to three blocks away, and they sound like they are next to me. My point is it is hard to tell where they actually are and when I drown out the noise because I think they may be extra loud two blocks away there they are. Some bikes ride consciously you know they do not ride in blind spots and such. Since when is it necessary to rev an engine while turning on a street and with no cars around to have to warn? I call it what my neighbor says is the bikes way of saying hello. That's cool but I think it makes it hard on the ears. I do not like the loud obnoxious booming either. Just for the record I understand I am picky but don't you think that is just being inconsiderate? No excuses tell it like it is and be proud of it you know? God bless.
The" loud pipes save lives " argument is lame. It would almost be believable if the clowns with the open pipes didn't do everything else in their power to draw attention to themselves, like wearing Halloween costumes year round. Also, how are they saving lives when they sit at a red light and rev their engines when they are not even moving?

The reason why many motorcycle are so loud is because they have been illegally tampered with by their owners and equipped with loud non-EPA compliant after market exhasut systems. There are even loud motorcycles with no mufflers at all, only exhaust pipes called "straight pipes". That is in violation of state laws, local noise ordinances, and even federal law.
With all those laws being so flagrantly violated, you may wonder how those loud bikers get away with it. The answer is simple. All of those laws are not being enforced by authorities at all levels, especially at the local level by your home town police.
The reasons for that are numerous. But to put it in a nutshell, many police departments don't think it's a big deal for motorcycles to be loud, many even think motorcycles are manufactured to be loud, which they are not, and don't think it's worth their time to enforce the law that prohibits the awful noise they spew out and the illegal exhasut systems that allow that awful noise to spew out. Part of the reason why the police don't care about motorcycle noise is because they don't receive enough citizen complaints about it. At least, that's what they often claim ( a classic excuse).
If you really want something done about loud motorcycles, complaining on forums like this is not likley to get you results. You have to complain to the authorities and not take no, or any excuses for not acting, for an answer. You have to pressure your authorities ( police, city council, state legislators) to knock off the excuses, get the move on, and aggressively enforce the laws that prohibits loud pipes and the noise they spew out all over the place.
